Minimally Invasive Guided Surgery of Tri-Service General Hospital Received Global Recognition (October 30, 2015)

(Written by Reporter Lin, Ching-Chieh from Military News Agency, Taipei, October 29th)

Deputy superintendent of Tri-Service General Hospital Pan, Ju-Yu indicated that the hospital has studied minimally invasive guided surgery for many years, and this technology has been widely applied to joint endoscopic surgery and spine surgery. In aspects of accuracy and post-surgery recovery, the technology has received highly recognition. Deputy superintendent Pan further said that compared to the navigation system before, the new 3D tomography system used in surgery can provide instant images and data and reduce the procedure of positioning and registration in surgery at the same time, which help increase surgical accuracy.

Pan, Ju-Yu pointed out, thanks to the advanced navigation technology, the O-arm navigation system can be accurately applied to small joint endoscopic surgery, such as shoulder, which was impossible for the old navigation system to achieve. To improve the accuracy of surgical rivets implant location and thus increase the rate of surgical success, Department of Orthopedics has conducted analyses for more than two years and overcome many technical limitations. It uses an O-arm navigation system to continuously simulate surgery on human models and cadaveric bones. In the most recent year or more, it has obtained the technical breakthrough and became the first 20 shoulder endoscopic surgery globally where the O-arm navigation system was applied. Related research results were presented in “59th Korea Orthopaedic Assembly” and received huge responses and praises from scholars around the world.
